In early August We enjoyed a fun and relaxing 10 day cruise to Alaska on the Regal Princess. It sure is a treat to have fancy meals served to us with first class service twice and sometimes even three times a day. The service on the ship is fantastic and we met many nice people – especially the 6 that we had dinner with almost every night. Besides eating well, we also enjoyed the many onboard activities – a dance class, trivia challenges, theater shows, nature talks on Alaska and movies. It was also very nice to sit in the big-windowed lounge at the front of the ship and just read and enjoy the view. We didn’t spot any whales but when we were cruising the Inside Passage we saw a group of 5 bears running along the shore!
We kept very busy in each of the 3 ports we visited. In Victoria we saw the beautiful Butchart Gardens and the elegant Fairmont Empress Hotel where afternoon tea costs over $50 US! In Sitka, we learned about the Native and Russian people of the area at the National Historic Park. We also saw eagles up close at the Raptor Center where volunteers care for injured birds until they can return to life in the wild. In Juneau (Alaska’s state capitol) we took a bus to see the impressive Mendenhall Glacier. In Haines (population 2,000) we got a taste of small town life in Alaska. Here we took a wildlife tour and saw salmon, seals and more eagles, and we saw a theater group perform stories of the native people.
