During a beautiful September weekend we drove to the Sierra for a camping trip in an area known as Little Yosemite. We stayed one night at a quiet campgroup near Calaveras Dome, popular with rock climbers. The next day we did a portion of an easy 4x4 trail until we somehow found ourselves off the route, despite having a book with detailed trail directions. We continued onward and changed the plan as we went along.
Our new route took us to the tiny town of Railroad Flat. Formerly a mining area, the entire town is now owned by a millionaire who uses the land for bison and cattle ranching. Another easy 4x4 trail took us past some of the ranches and then back to a main road which took us through the town of Sheep Ranch, CA, population 32!
